With 15 entries in our first annual Coolest Socks in the Department contest, Dr. Rob Losey had a tough job of picking a winner. But after much deliberation, he has picked the top three. First place goes to Maddy Mant (#117), second to Mindy Pitre (#116), and third to Dr. Owen Beattie (#119). Dr. Losey based his decision on photos taken throughout the morning, so he had no idea whose socks he was picking. Here are his remarks:

1. #117. Nice colour and length but the real tie breaker here is the rip along the left sock. Shows a wild side and a complete lack of respect for authority. These are clearly not just for show. True sock rebel.
2. #116. Obviously some sort of illegal exam cheat sheet confiscated from a student. Epitome of a true phys anthro nerd. Might have been number one, but socks never looks the same on the feet as on the table.
3. #119. One word: sexy. Sheer plus a bit shiny. AND the first skin I have seen since late last summer. Worn with sandals--priceless. Birkenstocks or Lederhosen would have placed this entry at #1.
The JUDGE

This contest could not have happened without the generous support of Hub Mall Administration (who donated our first prize Hub Mall gift package), the Department of Anthropology (who donated the second and third prize bottles of wine). A special thank you to Dr. Rob Losey for judging the contest and Dr. Chris Fletcher, who, despite having the cool socks that inspired this contest, and entering a record three times, was unable to take home a prize today.

Check out tomorrow's issue of the Anthropology Newsletter for pictures of all the entries.
